I do a LOT of traveling for business spend a lot of time in airplanes and hotels. While I get to visit some beautiful cities, all that time on the road messes with my sleep, my digestion and my overall mood, so I’m always on the lookout for ways to make time away from home a little more comfortable. Believe it or not, herbs make great traveling companions!
I started out adding tummy tamer tea bags to my packing list. Business trips mean heavy meals and eating later in the evening than I’m used to, and a cup of tea is a perfect natural antidote for an upset stomach. Most hotel rooms have a little coffee maker, so it’s no problem to heat water for a cup or two for my after-dinner nightcap.
To help with the sleep issues and general crankiness that creeps in at the end of the day, I brought along some soothing bath salts on my most recent trip. I used teapot-size tea bags to make single-bath packets that easily fit in my makeup bag. They did wonders for soothing my nerves after a stressful day, they smell amazing, and they made my skin feel great, too.

To make a batch of bath salts, combine the following ingredients in a large bowl:
- 3/4 cup Himalayan salt
- 1/2 cup oatmeal
- 1/2 cup powdered milk
- 1/4 cup dried rose petals
- 1/4 cup dried lavender
I used a food processor to grind the oatmeal up a bit, but you can leave it whole if you’d prefer to skip this step.
Mix the ingredients together and spoon into large heat-seal tea bags<. You should have enough for 4-5 tea bags. Seal the tops shut and store in an airtight container until you're ready to use.
Then just toss one in a tub of warm water, relax and enjoy. The roses and lavender in this mix are awesome for relaxation, the oatmeal and powdered milk make your skin happy, and the teabags mean there’s no mess from the dried herbs. Give them a try – you’ll be zenned out in no time!
