While I had my essential oils out to make the Aloe Vera Burn Treatment a couple weeks ago, I used the same oils to make this all natural bug-bite relief roll-on. The Boy is a mosquito magnet and this works better for relieving itchy bug bites than any over-the-counter remedy we’ve tried. And since it doesn’t contain alcohol, it doesn’t sting if the skin around a bite is irritated.
You’ll need:
- A small roll-on bottle
- Carrier oil – I used safflower oil, but grapeseed or sweet almond oil works well, too
- Lavender essential oil
- Tea tree oil
- One vitamin E capsule
If you can’t find roll-on bottles locally, you can order them on Amazon. They’re great for all kinds of essential oil projects. These are the bottles I use: Chefland 10ml Refillable Glass Roll On Bottles. (Please note this is an affiliate link. If you click through and purchase, I receive a small percentage. Every little bit helps!)
Prick the Vitamin E capsule with a pin or toothpick and squeeze the oil into your bottle. Add 10 drops of lavender oil, 10 drops of tea tree oil, and fill the rest of the way with carrier oil. Snap the ball into place, cap the bottle and shake well.
To use, just roll a small amount on the itchy spots.

I love this! I get eaten alive by bugs in the summer time. Thanks for sharing this simple yet effective recipe. It has to smell much better than traditional bug spray! I use tea tree oil in my dog’s ears too.
What a timely post, considering that we are under the Attack of the Killer Mosquitoes here in Michigan this year! 🙂 Stopping by from Tips & Tricks Tuesday!
Great post!! I have just discovered essential oils for fighting bugs, too. All of the ones you mentioned are great, and they can also be used on dogs.
I’m going to try this tonight! We have a cookout planned for tomorrow night and the mosquitoes are so bad around here this year…
Thanks for the recipe! I love essential oils and make my own insect repellent using them 😉
Do you have a favorite recipe for insect repellent? I’m testing a few for a friend who can’t use traditional bug sprays but would love to know what’s worked best for you!
