Hello, I’m Pam Long. Welcome to Clever Little Mouse!
I grew up surrounded by crafty people. Several aunts and both grandmothers crocheted, crafted and did beadwork. My dad was a self-taught woodworker and builder of things, and my Mom made clothes for herself, my sister and me. If I could find a picture of it, she could recreate it. I remember waiting for the fall Sears and JCPenney catalogs to arrive so I could pick out the dresses I wanted her to make me for school. I still have a few of them tucked away in my cedar chest, well loved and well worn after making their way from me to my sister to four younger cousins and back again.
I got my first sewing machine when I was six, a little green plastic number that ran on batteries and snarled thread more often than it stitched, but I promptly made a doll blanket and an apron and I’ve been sewing ever since. I took home ec in high school, earned spending money fixing hems and sewing on buttons for the guys in my college dorm and still get together with a couple long-time crafty friends now and then to try a new project or two.
I’ve learned so many things from others over the years.
My dad taught me the value of measuring twice and cutting once, and that anything worth doing is worth doing right.
My mom taught me that it’s okay to have more than one passion; besides sewing, she also learned to paint and taught herself to weave baskets. There’s no end to the crafty things that woman can master.
And my first home ec teacher taught me not to hand sew with my work in my lap (but not before I sewed a project to my pant leg not once, but twice).
And now it’s my turn. The more I talk to people who don’t sew or craft but want to, the more I realize how much I enjoy creating new things and using projects to teach. I love sharing tips and tricks that take the fear out of crafting and guiding a project through from an idea in someone’s head to a wonky sketch to a finished item. I hope that the tutorials and patterns I share will inspire someone to take a deep breath, gather their supplies and try something new.
